No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation.
All about the Amendment
This amendment gives everybody a right to not be acused for a crime with a punishment of death, prison, or loss of rights unless a panel of 12-23 citzens think there is enogh evidence for a trial. This amendment also protects people from self-incrimination, and being tried for the same crime twice. Everybody is also entitled to a fair and equal trial. This is because of due process. This amendment is also in the Bill of Rights.
Importance of this Amendment
This amendment is important because people shouldn't get punished for a crime they may not have done especially with a severe punishment like death, prison, or loss of rights. People also should not have to testify against themselves, and this law protects people from self-incrimination. Self-incrimination is accusing yourself for a crime. This amendment is also important because a person accused of a crime is entitled to a fair and equal treatment, this is called due process.
